In 1347, a terrible plague from Central Asia, reached the ports of the Mediterranean. During 1348, it spread quickly through Europe, causing the death of at least a quarter of the population. Giovanni Boccaccio, a well known young writer fights the anguish of the pandemic by composing a collection of one hundred short stories.
The author imagines that to escape infection, a group of ten young and wealthy Florentines have escaped to a villa in the hills. To pass time, they share the task of each telling ten short stories around a topic that that changes every day for ten days: this will be the Decameron, the book's primary title that translates to "a ten-day" in Ancient Greek.
Boccaccio uses diverse sources, with different contents and tones. The protagonists are kings and queens, nobles and bishops, merchants, thieves, and swindlers. The stories develop around the theme of love and its irresistible force, virtue, wisdom, and credulity.
